Grass free wild flower lawn seed mix
This is a grass free version of my unique wild flower lawn seed mix, to create a wonderful wild flower lawn that you can mow to keep short and tidy.
It contains the 26 beautiful wild flower species that are in my popular low flowering lawn with grasses mix, including wild orchid, wild thyme, lawn chamomile, wild marjoram and other gorgeous species This mixture is fantastic for bees and butterflies as well as humans. These plants are tolerant of mowing. This wild flower lawn will tolerate a cut height of about 2 inches. Alternatively you can let them grow long and just cut them when you wish. It will cope with some shade, so long as you see sky when you look up, then it’s fine seeding it in that location.
If you prefer it short and neat then to receive good flowering maintain a mowing frequency of about one cut every 3 to 6 weeks for the majority of the summer but you can be flexible with this.
This grass free wild flower lawn seed mix is suitable for any soil and will come up year after year without the need for reseeding. It is for creating a lawn from scratch on bare ground, if you just scatter the seeds onto an existing grass lawn they will struggle to germinate. Use my low flowering lawn ‘plant plugs’ if you want to flower up an existing lawn, click here to see these.
Once established this species rich grass free wild flower lawn will display a wide range of some of our most beautiful native wild flowers with different flowers coming into bloom from spring, through summer and even into the autumn to produce a continuous show of colour.
My native seed mixtures are unique, so please browse through their contents by scrolling further down this page and you will see a much greater variety of species than is usually obtainable within a commercially available mix. Many of the species present are not found in other seed mixtures. This mix contains 100% wild flowers and no grasses.
The seed rate for this grass free mix is 2 grams per metre square.
What my customers say:
Dear Colin, Just writing to let you know that I’m absolutely delighted with the low flowering lawn mix of yours. This is its 2nd ‘summer’ and it’s exceeded all expectations. I’m up in Aberdeen’ where many folk told me I’d bought seed from too far south. My pride and joy just now is the common spotted orchid! The bees are loving the birds foot trefoil. Your sowing instructions were superb, logical and so easy to follow. Thanks again for a wonderful colourful bee-friendly patch of lawn. Regards, Pete Jeffels, Aberdeen.
